Christa Toole, born 1971 in Washington DC, spent her formative years with her family moving from Paris, France to Heidelberg, Germany and then back to the United States. Christa studied at Vassar College in Poughkeepsie, NY where she became a studio art major, exploring different techniques of drawing, sculpture, and printmaking. In her final years, she focused mainly on painting in oil. After graduation from college Christa Toole moved to downtown Manhattan where she lives and works today. She participated in many group shows in New York such as the Fish Heads show at Max Fish alongside Kiki Smith and other lower east side artists. She exhibited with a group of artists curated by Chris Kelly and Alfredo Martinez with artists Donald Baechlor and David Weiss on a multiple of occasions. Most recently she has been showing with two groups of artists at a variety of venues around New York City, the Exhibitionists and Jumparts. Her works are built by process painting. Each painting begins with an idea or expression that is then built upon and transformed into the final image. Colors and lines infuse depth and bring sculptural elements into the painting. Expression has free reign and gives Ms. Toole's work great emotive power. She is working towards incorporating figurative elements into her paintings as she has a strong background in figurative painting and sculpture. Energy and movement are recurring themes. |
