Like a hybrid of the scientist who takes samples at carefully timed intervals and the shaman who performs elaborately orchestrated rituals, I develop tools and methods for inquiry into the subtler aspects of reality. My assemblages, sonic experiments, multiples, and printed matter exist as alchemical apparatus and ritual objects used to access the place where the tangible and the mystical converge. Installations, performances, and actions using these tools are vital aspects of my work. Through the use of classic techniques such as silk-screen, letterpress, 8mm film, and an analog 4-track, and by combining cast-off household items, objects from nature, and other time-worn materials in assemblages, my pieces often have a mysteriously vintage feel. The ordinary and the taken-for-granted, when seen in a new context or put to unexpected use, have the power to elicit a sudden sense of the improbable nature of existence. All of my work is ultimately based on my "Choose Determinism" concept, the paradoxical notion that free will and destiny exist simultaneously, just as the laws of classical physics and quantum mechanics are able to coexist. The installation for ECCO VANITAS is designed to convey the sense that "scientific" probing into the mysteries of the universe is like an infinitely complex puzzle, a game, a hidden code that may be cracked through awareness and careful observation of details. The objects in the arrangement will be moved in a predetermined manner according to unpredictable shifts in the weather. Passers-by the gallery will be able to follow the "game" as the season turns to winter and the system behind the glass evolves. A form of alchemy will occur as associations between objects located near one another are considered and reconsidered, and as other objects disappear and are replaced. |
