My paintings are self-portraits…portraits of the spirit. That is where distinctions disappear. While my art is an _expression of my individuality, it is where I can identify with the universe. Circles have been more than a visual symbol to me. From the smallest cells, to the Earth and the ever - expansive curvature in space, the spherical form is everywhere. Perhaps it is why we don’t see it. I emphasize it in my work so we do see it. Experience it. Portals to self -discovery. I enjoy the qualities of the paint, its fluidity and texture. It is a reflection of how I see the energy in all things, flowing and spinning in harmony. By contrasting highly textured surfaces with flat surfaces, vertical and horizontal drips, circles of different proportions, through use of various mediums like oils, acrylics, varnishes, wax, sand, beads, etc. a tension exists. This tension is the force that keeps the paintings alive. The process of painting is meditative for me. Intuition plays a very important role. By letting go of my own desires in controlling the painting it allows me freedom to express my higher self. By dripping paint, and sometimes molten wax, from both sides of the canvas, I strive for a timeless, gravity- free ground on which to create. This non-dualistic approach to creating oneness is very important in my final visual _expression. That is where there is no beginning, middle or end. Circle. While labels are necessary to distinguish one work from the next, the presence of something higher can only be felt from the work and not from the labels. I like my works to speak for themselves and hope to bring the viewer into a meditative and contemplative state. My son helped me discover what is truly important in life. After coming full circle I am sharing the joy and love I feel in every painting I create. That is my spirit, my circles and my life. |
