Thinking is never a straightforward process. Originating from the inside and outside simultaneously, the direct antecedent of any contemplation is impossible to trace. Each of our private considerations is built on the foundation of the one that came before, while the foundation is supported by every bit of information floating in the ether. Pervasive, external forces, excessive in their invisibility, subtly influence even the most pointedly conscious thought. The media is one of the many pressures subconsciously moulding our thinking and decision-making processes. This work examines and explores the pervasive presence of the news media and how its position in our culture affects the mind. All of the work strives to maintain the integrity of the original materials. Either the newspaper is used as a means to an end or an end in itself. When the physicality of the paper is removed, the ink is preserved. The materials themselves act as a common language to unite any viewer with the work. Once the news was ink on paper, paper in hand, unfolded, a tool for communication bridging geographical distances between people. Today the news is overwhelming, infinite in its enormity, with the written word replaced by the broadcast, complimented by text, stationary and scrolling. Information seems to come from all directions, enigmatic in its motivations, ambiguous in its truth. Examination and interpretation of the news would be a daunting task if it were our only responsibility. This work is a mindful inquiry into the lines between conscious, subconscious and unconscious thought coupled with the forces of external influence. Identity, never self-contained, is a constant interaction between the self and the other. The fluidity of the individual, in a constant state of becoming, is relentlessly seduced and manipulated, shaped and impelled by the world in flux. |
